The Robert & Freda Brown Paramedic Emergency Health Science Program is designed for currently licensed Emergency Medical Technicians who wish to advance their education and become paramedics鈥攑rofessionals licensed in New Jersey as Mobile Intensive Care Paramedics (MICPs).
MICPs are mobile healthcare clinicians who assess patients, establish clinical impressions, develop and implement treatment plans, and continually reassess patient responses. They provide care primarily in prehospital and interfacility environments and may practice aboard Mobile Intensive Care Units, Mobile Specialty Care Units, and Mobile Aeromedical Care Units.
Their scope of practice is defined by their associate degree education, National Registry Paramedic certification, New Jersey MICP licensure, and credentialing by a physician medical director. Additional information is available in the .
MICPs practice under their own professional licenses with prospective, contemporaneous, and retrospective physician medical oversight. Accordingly, current licensure and clinical experience as an Emergency Medical Technician are prerequisites for admission to the Paramedic Emergency Health Science degree program.
The program meets or exceeds the competencies and educational content established by the , as amended on February 24, 2025. These standards incorporate the instructional guidelines previously published as separate documents for each EMS clinician level.
The program also complies with the applicable New Jersey paramedic regulations, including N.J.A.C. 8:41 and N.J.A.C. 8:41A, and is approved by the .
